EDITORIAL Issue 1
Like
any product or idea, there has to be a starting point. This is the
beginning of a new idea - and one that will very soon rival the
printed page. At the moment there are more email messages sent per
day in the US than all other pieces of mail. This is how things are
changing. Granted, a lot of the items are junk and not read at
all, but the concept of doing things such as teaching via the
computer screen is one that will very soon outflank the text
book. There are two reason for this. Electronic texts can
be updated and corrected at a moments notice. It is therefore more
current and has the advantage of world-wide distribution at
virtually no cost to any of the parties. It is also much
more environmentally friendly as no (very little) paper is involved
in the distribution of the information. Up to now there has
been very few ways to place a value on material on the web and thus
only a limited amount of in-depth material has been
presented. But since the introduction of methods of
charging small amounts of money to credit cards, (such as
PAYPAL) websites will begin to flourish with
pay-per-page viewing. Our site is one of the first.
TALKING ELECTRONICS
Interactive is a new concept in producing the quality
of a printed magazine as a web-based magazine. Not only does this
provide the reading enjoyment of a normal magazine, but it saves the
delay in receiving issues. All the features of the printed
word are available on the web, as well as a number of additional
benefits. Anything that needs to be saved as a hard copy can be
printed via a printer while the bulk of the material can be read
directly from the screen or saved on a hard-drive. Let me
emphasise that
TALKING ELECTRONICS
Interactive is not available in printed format.
It is only web-based. The Interactive Edition is
designed to get you into electronics, so you can enjoy
this science and provide you with the grounding to make it
your career. One of the hidden benefits of the web is
linking. Articles and ideas can be linked via links so you don't
have to go looking through "back copies" or text books to find a
particular piece of information. On many occasions I have
spent an hour or more trying to find a particular item. I then
turned to the web and within seconds the search engine came up with
the answer I needed. The web is truly amazing and it is
still in its infancy. Don't forget, many brilliant inventions
started slowly: the telephone, typewriter and photo-copier are
just a few. The web has only reached a few percent of its
capability. Imagine having an archive of the last 10 years copies of
every magazine! Or an e-version of every text book - with
linking to similar articles in other books! Your search and study-time would be
slashed! That's exactly what will be done with this e-magazine.
It will be fully linked and turn into a miniature
encyclopaedia. Already we have the most comprehensive Library of
Symbols on the web and this is just one of the features you will
be able to access, now that you have subscribed. The main thrust will be to get you into
electronics. It doesn't matter if you want to serve in an
electronics store, repair electronic equipment or program
microcontrollers; the content of the magazine will give you the
"talking point" (jargon) you need to move into this
field. As I have always said, electronics is not a job . .
. it's a career. You can be in electronics your whole life and
every day can be magic. Each issue of
TALKING ELECTRONICS
Interactive will cover a
number of areas. Two of the courses in the first issue are: Basic
Electronics Course and PIC Programming Course. The
Basic Electronics Course will cover componentry and "building
blocks" while the PIC Programming Course will cover the
aspect of creating a program for a micro-
controller. There will
also be feature articles, projects, data sheets and lots of other
essential information. The only way to comprehend
electronics is by a "hands-on" approach. In each issue we will be
providing construction projects that complement the theory we are
covering. These projects can be ordered by simply clicking on the
"ORDER" button - another amazing feature of the web. The
Editor of
TALKING ELECTRONICS
Interactive has been producing Talking
Electronics magazine for the past 20 years and has designed over
300 kits to complement the articles he has written. All the projects
have been designed around "building Blocks" and as you become
familiar with the operation of these "blocks" you will build-up your
electronics knowledge and very soon be able to design and construct
your own circuits. It will take a few issues for things to
come together and then you will be "on your way."
I will be seeing you later in the course with more
thoughts,
For now,
Thank you for subscribing, I know you won't be disappointed. All the best,
Colin
